Response to the Guest House
The demons come to tea (with thanks to Stephen Levine)

Who's that thumping so roughly on my door
rattling the windows and stamping on the floor?
When I open up quaking, there's Anger,
Red-faced and fist shaking.
'Come in and sit by the fire', I say,
"and tell me, what's got into you today?'

Misery's next, dragging her feet,
Snivelling and snuffling, she slumps in a seat.
'Good to see you-cup of tea?', I say.
'Suppose so', she mumbles, 'A weak one, OK?.
'So how are you doing? This is a nice surprise.'
'Dreadful, have you got all day?', she sighs.

The three of us settle down for a chat
When another crowd appears on the mat –
Resentment, Boredom and Panic Attack
With the twins Fear and Trembling hiding at the back.
'Terrific, there's room if we all squeeze up.
I'll put on some music-we can have a knees up.'

Then a little pale fellow tugs at my sleeve,
‘Hi, Doubt, what’s up, are you wanting to leave?’
He whispers, ‘You’ll never get rid of this bunch –
they’ll trash your pad and still expect lunch.
I simply wouldn’t put up with this lot.
I’d send them packing as quick as a shot’

Just then Trust arrives, a good friend and true,
And reminds me, 'These demons are all part of you.
If you don't make them welcome you'll miss the chance
To learn more about them and join in their dance.
Their energy's yours, it just needs to transmute,
And when you befriend them you’ll find they're quite cute.'

'Dualistic perception creates an illusion
that negative mind-states are an intrusion,
when actually, no more and no less,
they're just a natural part of the process
of being alive, and by the way, did I mention,
all they need is a bit of mindful attention?'

All this rings true and I resolve
To let all doubts and fears dissolve.
Looking up I notice the guests who had been
So awkward, so troublesome, so full of spleen,
Have changed-Anger smiles, Boredom chats, Panic calmly sips tea -
there aren't any demons and there isn't a me

Holding my daughter in my arms is no longer just an action, it is me being present with my daughter, feeling the power of my love for her, smelling her presence in my arms and appreciating all she has brought into my life.
